The Zimbabwe Chess Federation extends its heartfelt congratulations to Tawona Magede on the successful attainment of his Bachelor of Honours Degree in Accounting, a significant academic milestone that reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.
Mr. Magede’s achievement is particularly inspiring because it embodies the values that chess seeks to cultivate in young people—discipline, strategic thinking, patience, hard work, and the pursuit of continuous improvement. His success serves as a powerful reminder that excellence in academics and excellence in chess can go hand in hand.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Mr. Magede has distinguished himself as one of Zimbabwe’s most passionate young chess development advocates. Shortly after completing his Advanced Level studies, he took the bold initiative of establishing the Olympiad Chess Academy, driven by a vision to create opportunities for young chess players to learn, compete, and develop their talents.
What began as a modest initiative has since grown into one of the most respected grassroots chess development programmes in the country. Through consistent effort, innovation, and dedication, the academy has played a pivotal role in nurturing emerging chess talent and expanding participation in the game, particularly among school-going children and young players.
One of the academy’s flagship achievements has been the establishment of the annual Olympiad Chess Tournament, which has become a major fixture on the national chess calendar. The event now regularly attracts between 300 and 400 participants from schools, clubs, and communities across Zimbabwe, making it one of the largest and most anticipated chess gatherings in the country. Its growth over the years stands as a testament to Mr. Magede’s vision and commitment to the development of chess at grassroots level.
The tournament has earned a reputation not only for its competitive excellence but also for providing an inclusive platform where players of varying ages and abilities can test their skills, gain valuable experience, and foster friendships through the game of chess. As a result, it has become one of the highlights of the annual Zimbabwe Chess Federation calendar and a key contributor to the growth of the sport nationwide.
The Zimbabwe Chess Federation is pleased to announce that the 2026 edition of the Olympiad Chess Tournament will be held on 1 August 2026 at Wise Owl School. The event is expected to once again attract hundreds of participants and continue its tradition of promoting chess excellence, youth development, and community engagement.
As Mr. Magede celebrates this important academic achievement, the chess community also celebrates his outstanding contribution to the growth of the game in Zimbabwe. His journey demonstrates how young leaders can make a meaningful impact when they combine education, passion, and service to their communities.
The Zimbabwe Chess Federation commends Mr. Magede for his remarkable accomplishments both in academia and in chess development and wishes him continued success in his professional career and future endeavours. May his achievement inspire many young chess players across Zimbabwe to pursue their educational goals with the same determination and excellence that he has consistently demonstrated.
Congratulations, Tawona Magede, on your well-deserved achievement. The Zimbabwean chess community is proud of you and looks forward to your continued contribution to the growth and success of chess in Zimbabwe.
