Budiriro 4 Primary School produced one of the most outstanding performances in the history of Zimbabwean scholastic chess by capturing gold medals in both the Under-14 Open and Under-14 Girls categories at the 2026 Crystal Candy Schools National Chess Championship held in Manicaland.
The remarkable achievement saw the Harare-based school dominate the competition across both divisions, demonstrating exceptional talent, discipline, teamwork, and strategic excellence. By emerging victorious in both categories, Budiriro 4 etched its name into the history books as one of the few schools to achieve a double championship triumph at a national schools chess tournament.
Throughout the championship, the school’s young chess stars displayed maturity beyond their years, overcoming strong opposition from schools representing all ten provinces of Zimbabwe. Their consistent performances, tactical brilliance, and determination enabled them to rise above a highly competitive field and secure the coveted national titles.
The double gold success is a testament to the school’s commitment to academic and sporting excellence, as well as the dedication of its coaches, teachers, parents, and support structures that continue to nurture young chess talent. The achievement further highlights the growing strength of grassroots chess development in Zimbabwe and the important role schools play in identifying and cultivating future champions.
As national champions, Budiriro 4 Primary School has earned the honour of representing Zimbabwe at the prestigious Africa Schools Chess Championship, which will take place in Cape Town from 6–11 July 2026. The continental tournament will bring together the best young chess players from across Africa, providing Zimbabwe’s champions with an opportunity to compete against elite talent from the continent.
The stakes at the African championship will be even higher, as the top performers will qualify for the prestigious World Schools Chess Championship, where they will have the opportunity to test their skills against the finest young players from around the globe.
Budiriro 4’s historic double victory has not only brought pride to the school and the City of Harare but has also positioned Zimbabwe strongly on the continental chess stage. As the young champions prepare for Cape Town, the nation will be rallying behind them, hopeful that their winning momentum will continue and that they will once again raise the Zimbabwean flag high among Africa’s best.
The road to the world stage now begins in Cape Town, and Budiriro 4 Primary School has already proven that it possesses the talent, determination, and championship spirit required to compete with the very best. Their historic double-gold achievement will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of young Zimbabwean chess players to dream big and pursue excellence both on and off the chessboard.
