A strong delegation of 25 talented young chess players has departed Zimbabwe for Uganda to participate in the prestigious Africa Youth Chess Championship, one of the continent’s premier junior chess competitions bringing together Africa’s brightest young chess talents.
The championship, hosted by Uganda, is expected to attract top youth players from across the continent, providing an important platform for competition, international exposure, talent development, and the strengthening of friendships among Africa’s future chess stars.
Zimbabwe’s delegation comprises promising junior players who have consistently distinguished themselves in local and regional competitions. The young players will proudly carry the nation’s hopes as they compete against some of Africa’s strongest youth chess talents across various age categories.
The delegation is being led by Mr. Benson Magomo, who is serving as the Head of Delegation. His leadership and guidance are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the team remains focused, disciplined, and well-prepared throughout the championship.
Before departure, the team received a warm send-off from the Zimbabwe Chess Federation leadership at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. The President of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation took time to personally bid farewell to the players, officials, and accompanying team members, encouraging them to represent the nation with pride, discipline, determination, and sportsmanship.
The farewell ceremony reflected the federation’s continued commitment to youth chess development and its confidence in the abilities of the young ambassadors representing Zimbabwe on the continental stage.
The team has since safely arrived in Uganda and is reported to be in high spirits ahead of the commencement of the tournament. Excitement and optimism remain high within the camp as the players prepare for what promises to be a highly competitive and memorable championship.
Participation in the Africa Youth Chess Championship presents an invaluable opportunity for Zimbabwe’s young players to gain international experience, improve their competitive skills, earn continental recognition, and continue raising the Zimbabwean flag high in African chess circles.
The entire chess fraternity and the nation at large wish Team Zimbabwe every success as they embark on this important continental assignment.
