Zimbabwe Inmates Shine at 2nd Continental Online Championship for Prisoners 2026 – Africa

Zimbabwe once again demonstrated its growing strength and consistency in prison chess after delivering exceptional performances at the 2nd Continental Online Championship for Prisoners (COCP) 2026 – Africa Qualifier.

The continental qualifier, which served as the pathway to the global stage, was played as a 7-round Swiss team tournament featuring teams from across Africa. Both the Open and Women’s sections competed in a single combined pool, with qualification places awarded separately according to section standings.

The Zimbabwe Open Inmates Team produced a flawless and dominant campaign throughout the tournament. Displaying outstanding teamwork, tactical discipline, and fighting spirit, the team swept aside every opponent they faced to finish with a perfect 7/7 score. Their commanding performance secured first place 🥇🏆 and automatic qualification to the World Championship stage.

The Zimbabwe Women’s Inmates Team also delivered a commendable performance against strong continental opposition. Showing resilience and determination, the team finished in second place 🥈 in the women’s category, missing the top spot by only half a point behind Ghana. Their impressive finish was enough to secure qualification to the world stage as well.

These achievements further cement Zimbabwe’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading nations in correctional facility chess development. Since the inception of the Continental Online Championship for Prisoners, Zimbabwean inmate teams have consistently produced strong performances and continued to showcase the transformative power of chess in rehabilitation, education, discipline, and personal development.

The success of both teams is a testament to the hard work of the players, trainers, correctional services officials, and all stakeholders who continue to support prison chess development in Zimbabwe.

Congratulations to both the Zimbabwe Open Inmates Team and the Zimbabwe Women’s Inmates Team on this remarkable achievement. The nation now looks forward with pride and excitement as the teams prepare to represent Africa and Zimbabwe on the world stage.
