MINERVA ZIM OPEN 2026 — WHERE CHAMPIONS RISE!
The Minerva Zimbabwe Open Chess 2026 came to a successful conclusion at the Heritage Virtual Centre, Tynwald Primary School, bringing five days of competitive chess, regional participation, development and corporate engagement under the Minerva brand.
From the opening move on Wednesday to Sunday’s final battles, the Minerva Zim Open delivered a vibrant chess festival featuring the Open A, Open B, Ladies, Development and Corporate Sections.
The tournament attracted players across different levels of the game, while regional participation from Zambia, South Africa and Mozambique added an important international dimension to the event.
OPEN A — KUKUDZAREMA CLAIMS THE CROWN
Shephered Kukudzarema emerged as the champion of the Minerva Open A, finishing on 8 points after nine rounds. Kukudzarema produced a strong campaign against a quality field that included titled players and some of the region’s strongest competitors.
The Open A battle remained competitive throughout, with IM Gillan Bwalya, Augustine Mtonga, Emarald Mushore, CM Kaulule Siame Kela and other leading players challenging for the top positions.
OPEN B — MBABVU’S IMPRESSIVE CAMPAIGN
The Minerva Open B produced one of the tournament’s standout performances, with Blessing Mbabvu finishing on 8 points. Mbabvu maintained his position at the top through the decisive stages of the competition, demonstrating consistency and composure across the tournament.
The section also showcased a strong chasing pack, including Tafadzwa Sibanda, Knowledge Samboko, Walter Chipamba, Roland Muchesera and Thandazani Mushore, among others.
The Open B section demonstrated the depth of Zimbabwean chess, bringing together developing players and experienced competitors in a highly competitive environment.
LADIES SECTION — SHABA LEADS THE WAY
The Minerva Ladies Section delivered an exciting contest throughout the five days, with WFM Linda Dalitso Shaba finishing on 7½ points to take the title. Shaba remained among the leading players throughout the tournament and held her nerve in the decisive stages.
Christine Makwena, Refiloe Mudodo, Colletta Wakuruwarewa, WFM Constance Mbatha, Nomalungelo Mathe and other leading players ensured that the Ladies Section remained fiercely contested.
The section once again demonstrated the growing strength and depth of women’s chess in Zimbabwe.
CORPORATE SECTION — BUSINESS MEETS CHESS
The Minerva Corporate Section added a distinctive and important dimension to the festival, bringing the world of business onto the chessboard. With a large corporate field participating, the section provided companies and professionals with an opportunity to compete, network and experience the strategic nature of chess.
The Corporate Section was not simply about winning games. It demonstrated the natural connection between chess and business — strategy, calculated risk, decision-making, patience and the ability to anticipate the next move.
