The 2026 Zimbabwe Tertiaries Sports Association (ZITS) Open Chess Championship was successfully held at Harare Polytechnic from 5–9 May 2026, bringing together some of the country’s finest tertiary institution chess talent in a highly competitive and exciting tournament.
After five intense rounds of action, TESAZ 1 emerged as the champions of the Open Section with an impressive score of 4.5/5 points, finishing half a point ahead of runners-up ZUS 1. The tournament showcased exceptional skill, determination, and sportsmanship from all participating teams and players.
Among the standout performers of the championship were Blessing Moyo of ZUS 2, playing on Board 2, and Shepherd Kukudzarima of TESAZ 1 on Board 4, both of whom delivered flawless performances to finish the tournament with a perfect 5/5 score. Their consistency and brilliance were instrumental in their teams’ strong performances throughout the competition.
By virtue of their victory, TESAZ 1 has earned the honour of representing Zimbabwe at the upcoming CUCSA Games to be hosted in Botswana later this year. The team will carry the hopes of the nation as they compete against the region’s best tertiary institutions.
