Women Take the Lead: Over 80 Gather for Inspiring Chess Tournament in Celebration of Women’s Month

More than 80 women chess enthusiasts gathered at the iconic Dominican Convent School for a vibrant and inspiring Women’s Chess Tournament held in celebration of Women’s Month. The event was further elevated by the presence of Dana Reizniece-Ozola, who graced the occasion as the esteemed Guest of Honor.

The tournament brought together players of varying skill levels, united by a shared passion for chess and a commitment to breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated sport. The atmosphere was electric, filled with determination, camaraderie, and a strong sense of purpose as participants showcased their talent across the boards.

Hosted by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation Women’s Chess Commission in partnership with the FIDE Women’s Chess Commission, the event went beyond competition. It served as a powerful platform to celebrate the achievements of women in chess while reinforcing the growing role of the game in education, critical thinking, and personal development.

It is truly uplifting to witness the steady rise in women’s participation in chess across Zimbabwe, as more girls and women step forward to challenge stereotypes, embrace intellectual competition, and claim their space in the game. Events like these are instrumental in fostering inclusion, confidence, and empowerment.

Emerging as the standout performer in the Ladies Open category was Kudzanai Charinda, who delivered an impressive performance to walk away with the gold medal, capping off a memorable and impactful tournament.
