The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) Executive Board is pleased to announce a landmark resolution to fully implement the ZCF Constitution, marking a transformative era for chess administration in the country.
The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) will realign its executive structure in accordance with the 2024 Chess Constitution, adopted by affiliates on November 2, 2024 and reaffirmed at an executive meeting held on December 30, 2025.
This strategic move aims to modernize the federation’s governance, enhance operational efficiency, and decentralize authority to the grassroots level.
A Leaner, More Accountable Executive
The revised constitution introduces a streamlined 12-member National Executive, replacing the previous system which consisted of over 35 members. This change is designed to improve decision-making speed and institutional efficiency.
“These reforms represent our commitment to professionalizing chess governance,” the Board noted.
Provincial Empowerment & Decentralization
As part of the transition to the 2024 Constitution, the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) is rolling out provincial elections across all 10 provincial structures.
These provincial bodies will report directly to the National Executive.
This marks a historic shift from the “ticketing system,” where provincial leaders were appointed by the national office which saw some chairpersons holding up office for up to 20 years without facing election.
Empowering the Grassroots
The new decentralized model—inspired by the international structure used by FIDE—empowers provinces to elect their own leadership under National Body supervision. This shift is expected to:
• Increase accountability and transparency.
• Encourage local engagement and vibrancy.
• Fuel the growth of interprovincial competitions, driving talent development through healthy rivalry.
Under this new framework, districts will be formally established, and all chess associations and clubs within a province will fall under the management of their respective provincial leadership.
The 2026 Vision: Chess Kumusha
ZCF enters 2026 with a renewed focus on modernizing the sport. ZCF President Todd Mapingire noted that the goal is to transform chess from a niche pastime into a mainstream national movement.
“We are focusing on digital integration, grassroots accessibility, and corporate partnerships.
“We are learning from institutions like Zimbabwe Cricket, which launched Cricket Kumusha, and we will soon roll out our own version: Chess Kumusha,” said Mapingire.
Working alongside the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Recreation and Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, ZCF will identify schools in every province to serve as pilot projects for this national expansion.
Key Pillars of the Restructuring Strategy
• “Chess in Every School” Initiative: Aiming for visibility in every school nationwide, the “Catch Them Young” program uses chess to sharpen cognitive skills and provide a constructive alternative to drug abuse.
• Digital Transformation: ZCF is pioneering a hybrid model via the ZCF Chess App and virtual coaching. Provincial and district structures will coordinate “Centers of Excellence” to reach players in remote areas where physical clubs are scarce.
Recent Milestones & Upcoming Events
The success of this transition is evidenced by a high volume of prestigious tournaments. In December 2025, Zimbabwe solidified its status as a regional hub by hosting the 16th African Youth Chess Championship in Harare, which saw approximately 1,000 participants—the largest tournament in the country’s history.
Other major events in the 2025 calendar included:
• The CABS Candidates (Bulawayo)
• Crystal Candy Schools Nationals (Errymaple International, Zvishavane)
• The Cadets Qualifiers (Haig Park Primary, Harare)
• U14-U18 Qualifiers (Jameson High, Kadoma)
• The Minerva Zim Open 2025, which attracted more than triple its traditional numbers.
Continued corporate backing from CBZ, New World Properties, CABS, and Minerva Risk Advisors has significantly raised professional standards and prize pools.
ZCF continues to invite new sponsors to help meet the growing demand for equipment, noting that chess is a highly accessible sport requiring only a board to be played in any weather.
