Zimbabwe Chess Federation and Moscow Region Chess Federation of Russia Sign Historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) is pleased to announce the successful signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Moscow Regional Chess Federation (MRCF) of Russia. The signing ceremony took place virtually via Zoom on 20 October 2025, marking a historic partnership in the development of chess between the two federations.

This MoU establishes a framework for cooperation to be implemented within available financial resources and includes specific provisions for:

  1. Technical & Coaching Exchange: Training and advanced qualification for chess players and coaching staff through in-person exchanges in both Russia and Zimbabwe, as well as online programs.
  2. Tournament & Event Hosting: Organization of bilateral tournaments, delegation visits, and other events (seminars, symposia, conferences) on a reciprocal basis, both online and in-person.
  3. Information Sharing: Exchange of information and best practices in chess popularization and development.
  4. Program Implementation: The development of detailed cooperation programs, with all sports exchanges, event participation, and financial terms to be pre-agreed by both parties.

The agreement signifies a shared commitment to using chess as a tool for education, discipline, and international friendship. It also creates new opportunities for Zimbabwean players, especially juniors, to benefit from Russia’s deep chess expertise and experience.

Speaking after the signing, ZCF President Mr Todd Mapingire expressed gratitude to MRCF for the gesture of solidarity and mutual growth, stating, “This MoU is a strong step toward building a robust international chess cooperation. Our players and administrators will benefit greatly from Russia’s technical excellence and shared developmental values.”

The MRCF Representative Multiple Chess Champion Sergey Karjakin said “MRCF is one of the most rapidly developing chess federation among the Russian regions. Governed by multiple world champion Sergey Karjakin it pays a lot of attention to international projects and collaboration especially with African countries. MRCF is glad to find new partners in Africa claiming Zimbabwe its new regional partner that is worth relying on. For the MRCF it is another step forward to building a reliable and friendly chess community of equal partners.”

This partnership comes at a critical time as Zimbabwe prepares to host the Africa Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) in December 2025, further cementing the nation’s role as a key player in continental chess development.
