Zimbabwe continues to make history on the global chess stage, as the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Chess Teams—both Women’s and Open categories—begin their campaign today at the prestigious World Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners.

The teams earned the right to represent Africa after an outstanding performance at the African Prison Chess Championships, where Zimbabwe emerged as continental champions. This victory cemented ZPCS’s reputation as a force in prison chess development and earned them the honour to fly the African flag at the global level.
The championship, organised by FIDE (the International Chess Federation), in collaboration with penal institutions and NGOs worldwide, brings together inmates from over 50 countries in a unique initiative that uses chess to promote rehabilitation, discipline, and reintegration.
ZPCS’s participation is supported by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and reflects Zimbabwe’s growing influence in global prison chess reform. The teams are expected to demonstrate not only tactical brilliance but also the power of chess as a transformative tool within correctional systems.
As the tournament begins, the nation rallies behind the ZPCS teams—proud ambassadors of both Zimbabwe and the African continent.
Possibility is everything
