According to Todd Mapingire, ZCF president and head of delegation, It’s an honor to have Dominican Convent been the first school to represent Zimbabwe at such an event. Mapingire emphasized the team’s participation is about growth, exposure, and confidence-building in school sports participants in Zimbabwe.
The World Schools Chess Championship, inaugurated in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2023, has brought together 60 teams from around the world to USA. Zimbabwe’s participation is a testament to the country’s chess development and recognition as a chess base. Zimbabwe is among the only 3 African (Kenya and Ghana) countries partaking in the tournament.
Quote: Competing against top players from around the world helps players realize that age is just a number, said Mapingire.
Future Plans: Mapingire expects the Crystal Candy tournament to continue growing, with plans to table the 2026 calendar of events and projected membership fees during the third term of 2025.
